I am switching jobs- moving from mid-west to downtown SF. TC is 2x of what I make now but I understand it won’t be a uplift in lifestyle as SF is very expensive. I want to live in a decent 1br in downtown SF. What are the areas I should consider and what areas to avoid? Hope to get something within 2500-3000 range. Thanks!
That price ask might work in Dogpatch, which is pretty close to downtown
aim 3500+ you probably can find something.
You will get a studio in an ok ok area for 2500-3000. Be prepared to pay 3.5K for 1 BHK in decent area.
2500-3000 wont make it for a 1 bed. 3500 at least.
don’t think downtown is like other down towns in the country. Russian hill, Hayes valley, marina or mission might be a better place. 1 bed around $4000
Thanks everyone. Looks like I will have to go up in budget or go studio!
What’s with the BHL abbreviation that I’ve been seeing today... How is 1 BHK different from a 1 BR apartment? Is it an Indian thing? Edit: For those confused confirmed to be an Indian acronym for 1 BR.
Look around Polk Street / nob Hill for a decent apartment. Going further out than 19th Street in the Sunset/Richmond will be zero sunlight, 100% fog. Try for 1gig symetric fiber internet from Sonic.
Also couch surfing is a high art here. Find a couple of friends to put you up while searching.
I was having a hard time finding anything under 3500 and most were below average looking. With 320K you can max out your 401K and still have over 180K cash left per year after taxes. Even if you are paying 4K for rent, you still have 132K left. Perhaps find a roommate to share a nice apartment with? For comparison, in the Midwest with 155K you would barely have 95K left after taxes and maxing out your 401K. Even if your rent was 1K per month you still have 83K left versus 132K in the Bay Area!!! You get to save 50K more which likely would double your previous* saving rate.
Thanks for the analysis. So, where did you end up renting, and how much is your rent?
1bhk in 2.5/3 range is impossible unfortunately
