Following is, in my opinion true for tech workers and especially for SWEa

RoW (almost all) < USA < CA < Bay Area < SF.

Its hard to fins any other city better than SF in particular (cuz SF) and Bay Area in general (cuz of concentration of companies - oppurtunities/pay etc).

why so much hate for SF and bay on blind.

if u think someplace else is better please mention and explain.

sure u might have better QoL in say AMS. But it cant come close to Bay for tech career.

Bay Area isn’t affected by fire season too badly. Mostly just the occasional pollution flare-up.

Think hate is only for CoL in SF/Bay Area and not the tech career aspect of it.

No other first world city has poop police - that sums up SF succinctly. Many programmers aren’t insufferable bleeding hearts just want to be left the fuck alone. Losing out on a bit of TC (which just gets eaten up by higher COL) is worth avoiding people and companies where the insufferable white guilt and pandering is so pervasive.

    • Compensation is not a function of CoL, they’re completely separate. Comp has much more to do with how much value you bring the company, how hot the market is, etc. CoL has to do with how much the government collects in taxes and how much housing they let you build. CoL may have helped drive up comp in recent years but it’s nowhere near the most important factor. If it was you would see the same comp increase across other fields, not just tech.

COL. I live in Atlanta and my quality of life is seemingly better than people I graduated with who live in the Bay. I travel frequently, drive an exotic car, live in objectively the best neighborhood of the city... the bay has its pros too, for sure. I wouldn’t say I hate the Bay. It’s just not the promised land that many people who have only worked in Silicon Valley seem to think it is.

Unfortunately Atlanta is not a "tourist" town in that there's tons to see - it's more about the experience of living there - amazing restaurants, memorable underground bars (MJQ, Metalsome!), nicer people, lots of hikes. It's tough to pinpoint exactly, but the city itself just doesn't "get in the way" of your life like SF does. In SF, I have to wrroy about dodging homeless/crazies/πŸ’©, the inevitable discussion about polarizing politics/tech/work at parties, cost of living.

I totally get that SF has exciting opportunities and people are passionate about what they do (that's why I came here), but it's an unsustainable way of living the rest of your life. That's why so many people leave after 2-3 yrs.

Also, call me crazy, but SF lacks people with maturity. Im all for meritocracy over status, but a little professionalism doesn't hurt anyone (things like showing up to work with out shoes, making lewd jokes at work, etc)

    • People that travel to Atlanta for conferences and what not rarely get it. I lived there before SF and would pick it 1000 times again over the Bay. And more industry is growing there, too. I should have bought a house there when it was genuinely "cheap" to do so
