Need help breaking into biotech industry. I'm a medical technologist in top Boston hospitals. Anyone have any advice?

Should I try to get a molecular technologist position? Get a certificate to be a clinical research associate? MBA?

Any thoughts are welcome.

Thanks ahead,

Check out IVD companies. They hire test engineers to lead their clinical trials in research hospitals.

It really depends on what type of career trajectory you are looking for in Biotech. The job market is expanding and demand is high, however without an advanced degree that focuses more on theory you will hit a ceiling fast. You can get a spot working QC or QA or some sort of lab tech position. Lab positions are usually limited to production type jobs and if that's for you that's fine. But to move beyond the monotony of production you will need a more theoretical background. I'd recommend looking into some sort of Mol. Bio or Biotech M.S. degree program. Certificates will only get you so far in the industry. While the degree may not equip you any better for the position, appearances matter a bit more than they should in the private sector of Biotech. When trying to recruit investment the corporate side of the company had an easier time pointing to accolades of their scientists rather than their actual day to day contributions.

OP, I would like to connect with you. I am Data Scientist and just moved to Boston from NYC. I see a lot of use case using technology, machine learning in biotech industry. I think we could help each other by sharing experiences.

Medical technologists usually have a BS right? In that case your background and degree means getting a QC job is very doable. Start in QC then, depending on interest, figure out what your next step is. Or maybe QC is the right path for you.
