Without going the teaching route or having an employer sponsor you, is there any other way of getting a work visa in Japan? #workvisa #japan

You need someone to sponsor it, but once you have it it’s valid for 5 years and not tied to the sponsor. Iirc there are companies whose business model is just sponsoring people to get visas, and then firing them.

This isn't always the case. There are multiple types of work visas, and each have different expirations and 'attachments'.

The standard one most people would apply for is the Engineering/Humanities work visa. This can be 3 months, 1 year, 3 years or 5 years. You can put down a request for how long it is when you apply, but it's generally 'random' from an outsider's point of view. This is not tied to the company, so you can find another job (that the visa allows for, i.e. same field) and move without much problem (you do still need to inform the authorities, but that's it).

Then there is the HSP (Foreign Highly Skilled Professional) visa. This is always a 5 year visa, but is tied to the company. If you switch companies, you need a new visa.

I've had both of these visas, and a few other non-work type ones as well. Feel free to message if you have questions.

  • This pandemic leaves many people who are on work, student visa, and even some PR outside Japan without knowing when they're allowed to come back to Japan.

Your only other options are spouse by marrying a Japanese national or dependent by being married to someone on a work visa. Otherwise you will need sponsoring to enter the country.

As Amazon pointed out below, it isn't tied to your job, so if you leave before it's up, you don't lose the visa. However you do have a limited amount of time to find more work.

I think you can also get an investment visa which you need 50K USD to invest, but that's a bit more tricky.

One way many people do it, get a teaching job (super easy to get if you are a native speaker and have a pulse), work for a bit then quit and find something else. However, right now you're outta luck, borders closed for foreseeable.

Oh and contrary to what Amazon said - it's not guaranteed you will get a 5 year visa. It's either 1, 3 or 5 years and nobody knows how they decide.
