Hi, i have two offers. Eventually, for me it comes down to Name vs Money. Let me explain how.

I got GS new york offer for VP Product Manager. Base is $180k and TC is $230k
I got Google Boston or MTV offer for L3 Product Manager. Base is $120 and TC is $190k

I understand both are big names in their respective domains Finance and Tech.

Just need some perspective which one should be ideal for me to join for long run. I understand WLB is slightly better in Google. I also right now have option to either go for Boston or Mountain View Google. I am preferring Boston as I don’t want to leave East coast.
Please share your thoughts on Google vs GS. And if Google then which location MTV or Boston?

Yoe - 8 yrs
Current TC $130k

  • Engineering at GS is dying a slow death. Lack of vision and support from higher management is non-existent. Then there is forced RTO, no free food and other benefits going away...

  • From my experience, I have not seen too many product managers at GS. The one for my team manages a wide range of products, and also does quite a bit of QA verification. Also the one for my team works more closely with the IBs and bankers, and their wlb follows suite as well.

Ymmv but for a difference in 40k, I would go with google and avoid the potential 12hr work days, avoid working on uninteresting products, better growth in the tech space. Also I’m not sure about how PM is, but first year bonus is fixed, and then subsequent TC really depends on firm performance, and you may even get paid less further down the line

So a VP Product Manager at GS equates to an L3 at Google. Truly believe that Google will be a better name to have on your resume and be better for career growth and progression as well.

It also depends on what you want to be working on. Do you want to be working in tech products that help people? Or do you want to be working on things that make Goldman more money?

If you want a career in banking and finance then go with Goldman. If you want a career in tech, then go with Google.

190K today at Google which gives regular pay increases and even more importantly stock refreshers is better than that GS offer.

Besides, eng and product at GS will always take a backfoot to finance. Google name will go a lot farther.

  • VP at GS should be L5 at Google, so sounds like you're getting offered a much more junior position not just less money
