Tech to HFT

Apr 29, 2021 17 Comments

I am in dilemma of moving to tech from HFT or go to other HFT shop. Is there anyone who has worked at tech first and then moved to HFT for SWE role. I have seen few people going to HRT from Google etc. Just curious on their choice.

    • I haven't worked at faang before but have heard the tech and tools etc in general is better in tech firms than HFTs and have more interesting and varied problems to solve. Also the hierarchy is flat in general at HFT so limited growth potential if you want to lead a team for example. Hft tech mostly deal with low latency trading infra. TC could be higher in top HFTs but for long term is it better to stay in tech because of continued learning and may be going up the ladder or is it better to stay in HFT because of fast paced nature and possibly higher tc

The blanket statement that tech/HFT pays more is misleading. Today you have data point at your finger tips, check levels.fyi. Those data points are pretty much valid.

At what level you are comparing that is important. Also what is the growth path? Are you comparing l6/l7 or L8 or higher levels. What is the growth curve in HFTs? At 8+, 1.5-3 million is the range.

Additionally building features and products used by millions of people has a different charm. I am not talking about the koolaid of touching people’s lives or such but simply the impact of your work at a FANG company can be satisfying.

Choose what you love to do! At the end of the day it is important to be happy and satisfied. Good Luck!

These days you get paid more in tech than HFT, with much better WLB. I would advise you to try tech and see for yourself if you like it. You can always go back to HFT if you really want to. Given the non competes in HFT, if you are unhappy with the current role it's just much easier and rewarding to try tech than go directly to another HFT.
