Single, male, early 30s, moving to Seattle in the new year for my first SWE job. Been living in Canada for the past 10 years, so this will be a big change for me.

I ideally want to live in (or very close to) Kirkland in order to be able to walk to work or at least have a short commute time, but I am open to suggestions regarding other areas. Does Google (pre and post pandemic) offer shuttle services in the Seattle area?

My first year TC will be 210K with a 127K base. Using tools, I found out that my after deductions monthly income (not including bonuses and stocks) should be ~5.7K, so I came up with the following budget. Do you think this is reasonable?

Please comment / criticize so I can make changes!

TC: 190K, YOE: ~1

  • Rent you should estimate at ~$2500 unless you want roommates. And a $2800 apartment will be like 30% nicer than a $2500 apartment

Kirkland is nice but if you’re not working on the east side then I wouldn’t live there. It’s pretty secluded without a car. The Wave / The NOLO in Pioneer Square in Seattle is a fun place for single people to live. Best roof in the city; you can see into the Seahawks/Sounders stadium. You can either catch the light rail to get closer to Google (they’ll give you a transit pass/orca card) or you can ride a bike 1.5 miles. I feel the homeless population is finally being dealt with and Pioneer Square is gonna be a vibrant scene again

SWE L3. Base salary for new grad is 118K and 127K+ when you have some industry experience. As quoted by the comp team, first year TC is 190K.

    • Don’t let these people make you feel bad about your TC. As you said it’s a big jump for you and you’re happy.

DM me if you want to connect, happy to refer you to FB (my team is hiring too!) when you’re ready to make the jump and likely get a nice TC bump after 1 YOE at Google.

  • You should be able to get a one bedroom apartment for <1500. Look at Bellevue apartments, which is still a <20m commute to Kirkland.

For me it was completely voluntary. But as suggested by others I will probably use my existing savings to make a one time donation instead of a monthly payment.

I give way more than 1.6% to my church. It's also voluntary.
If you do plan on donating money, I suggest you look into donating stock. If you donate appreciated stock, you don't get hit with the tax on the gains (neither does the church).

Food… $400 is high if you’re eating meals at work and buying only basics at the grocery store to cook at home. Low if you get delivery every night. Depends on your lifestyle

    • Yea it’s totally based on your lifestyle. I spend <$400 but I like to cook often
