My wife and I are planning to move to NYC. I am a SW Eng with 6-7 years of expirience (on various of fields, mostly JAVA). What is the average salary I should expect? I know the large successful companies can pay a lot, but I am asking for the average case. Thanks.
I will need to first move there and only then start looking. (We will move because of her studies ).
Lol this is a truly awful idea
Why?
$150k in salary is a pretty solid ceiling in NYC for 95% of companies. If you make it into FB or Google, then you might make more due to generous stock compensation
You think it is higher or lower?
Bloomberg is very different from 95% of companies. That is why you think it's higher.
Field is large and, while big tech pays very well, there is a big long tail of much lower paying positions otherwise in the space. So agree with above. However, NYC also has lots of burbs and boroughs that have more affordable housing options within commute distance, so it can work out ok.
I think one of the problems in NYC tech scene is the scarcity of employers willing to pay top dollars for the best developers.
Its not employers, its scarcity of employees. Plenty of top paying shops here. FB, Google, Uber, Lyft, LinkedIn, Amazon, hedge funds etc. Problem is people don’t clear the hiring bar. I interview a lot of candidates.
Yeah I find because of many high rise housing and good transport it’s much easier to live in nyc making less than bay area.
Making less than $150k in NYC and living rather comfortably. It is quite doable if you don't splurge. (I work in Manhattan and commute is 35 mins.) For Java devs, finance is an option which pays well but has a reputation for poor wlb. Outside of big tech, expect between $140k - $170k base for that level of experience.
