I’m no longer at Amazon, but work at a notable and private midsized company with better engineering talent. Im currently a midlevel engineer trying to get to senior within the next year or two. I’m looking to make the move from tech to finance (still as a dev) in the next few years and was wondering if anyone had any advise on: 1. what books or resources to study with 2. what skills and qualifications are trading firms are looking for in a dev 3. for people who have made the switch in either direction (tech to finance or vice versa), was it worth it? 4. my undergrad grades aren’t remarkable in any way, but have done well in industry thus far. should i get a masters first? the types of firms im interested in are Two Sigma, Jane Street, Citadel, Jump, HRT, etc. TC: ~230K YoE: ~1
I don't think this generalizes well to other firms, but we hire primarily generalist devs, so there aren't really particular skills we look for for the most part. Just generally good developers. I made the switch from tech to finance. My job is a lot more interesting and challenging, but I definitely work more. TC is now about 10x what I was making when I left tech (although I was definitely underpaid then). Overall I think it was a good move for me. I doubt a masters would matter much to us.
Are you still a dev?
I still spend most of my time on dev work although I have a small number of direct reports now.
I don’t think there are trading tech specific things to be ready for, just the usual resources for technical development
