If you got a new grad offer at a game studio like EA or Blizzard and a new grad offer from an investment bank like Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan or Morgan Stanley, which one would you rather choose for career growth, wlb, benefits and resume boost? Assume money is very similar. Please comment if you have any direct experience with either type of companies as a SWE. #tech #SWE
Money is absolutely not similar, game studios are known for lowball $$
IBs also lowball
Depends on the role, what are you interested in? I know coworkers at GS who went to faang companies if that is your goal.
Game Studio >>> Banking. Both have pretty bad short and long term comp. I see a lot of game programmers exit to high performance work in HFT or FAANG, so I think there's more talent there. Talent is likely also higher at game studios because of the quantity of devs purely driven by passion, which isn't the case for banking
They both have shit comp. Either will land you in FAANG if that’s the end goal. Banks might be slightly higher comp depending on company but not by much. Banks have gotten better at WLB for tech (although some pockets still suck), so unless you’re at one of the good studios like EA, game studio would probably be worse WLB. Tech-wise, game studios are probably more fun. If you join a bank, have fun working on 30 year old tech that your managers think is the most amazing shit ever for absolutely no god damn reason.

Notion for investment banks is that you'll be a secondary citizen as a swe in that industry
Is that seen as a negative by a recruiter or an engineering manager? Because even though a leading bank would obviously place finance first, there might be areas with interesting development taking place?
don't think a recruiter or eng manager would care for future jobs as long as you have interesting projects to talk about. my comment was more for while you're there
