How bad is it to quit a job without another offer lined up?

Long time lurker and not sure if anyone would have any advice. Currently working as a Business Systems Analyst (think functional/implementation consulting for ERP software). It’s fine at best, but everyone is being forced back to the office in a few weeks so the remote flexibility which was the one redeeming thing about this job is gone. I feel stagnant in professional growth and my career internally and the only option is to leave.

I have a MS in an analytical field and am looking to move towards Data analytics. I’ve made it to several last round interviews but nothing has worked out yet. I desperately want to leave this company - just the thought of being back in the office and continuing to work here is depressing beyond belief. If it was a company I loved and was passionate for it would be an entirely different story.

I have a side hustle I could support myself with for sometime if need be. I’m just wondering how bad a resume gap would be if I were to quit now to devote more time to interviewing and preparing.

Any advice from someone in/from a similar situation or a referral would be awesome.

No one care about gaps anymore. Take care of yourself first.

I think there’s some risk of being low-balled in your next offer if the new company thinks you don’t have any good alternative. If you can get multiple offers, that will solve that problem, or just try hard to get offers before you’re desperate.

Taking some time off to recharge, build skills, and “focus on your passion projects” after 2+ years of working through a pandemic is going to seem totally reasonable to most employers imo

  • I just did that. didn't matter, although I do have 7+ yoe of experience in data science.

As stripe mentioned, some companies might low ball, which can be mitigated by competing offers. I might have been low balled, but my mental health and interview performance improved a lot after leaving

  • As other posters say it doesn’t matter much and matters even less in early career. As for the lowballs, just ignore them.
