I am thinking of a sabbatical next year. I will quit, take some time off to recharge before I start interview prep and to look for the next play. How much time off do you think is safe. Here are some parameters, I have spent ~14 years in FANG, currently E6@Facebook working on ML. I will target L6/L7 positions with high 500k+ TC. My main worries are, 1. An economic/tech downturn 2. Not having a job making it hard to negotiate. Current TC: ~700K
You can afford 6 months easily.
the worst of the economic downturn is over. post election covid will be history. I would not worry about #1. #2 you would not want to be at a company that lowballed you because they thought you had nothing else.
"the worst of the economic downturn is over. post election covid will be history." Famous last words
Not really. There was a massive hiring spree 2021
Start something of your own , become an employer and not be employee all your career.
Enjoy your time off. Anyone who’s worked for in the industry for sometime will understand you need a break once a while. Regarding point 2, there’s no need to worry. You’ll have plenty of time to prepare, get multiple offers and be in a great position to negotiate. I have taken time off (6 months) twice in my career and came back stronger.
Thanks for the inputs. What is your yoe pls?
How did this go OP?
I am thinking about 1 year sabbatical but hard to decide with unvested RSU and postponing from last year for the same. Any one in same situation? Any thoughts please
@uhgycsk What happened?
You have a mountain of experience behind your shoulders. So long as you can show you're staying relevant while taking time off, I don't see why you couldn't take all the time you want. *On a sabbatical right now, though nowhere near your amount of experience and live on <$40k/yr with no major financial commitments
