I'm finding my new L6 promotion salary disappointing and wanted to get a feel of experts who have more data and insights. I have been a transformation lead at L5 in the organization, building new systems, training teams on standard operating principles, solving for unique operational issues that even dedicated teams, whose charter involves building such systems, did not deliver (they had other higher priorities). Yes there are metrics supporting my claims, yes they are included in promo docs and are accessible. My knowledge sphere and contribution spreads over both hardware and software teams/projects. Eventually, going to the grueling and broken promotion system - I have been approved for promotion. What came as new numbers for TCT are sad, particularly seeing how much have contributed the entire org. Here is my data: Joined as L5 with 15 YoE (3 at company) TCT: 273k (Base: 177k, RSU: 96k) L6 promotion numbers TCT: 290k (new Base: 185k, new RSU given: 51k total worth) Location: Bay Area I feel this is very low for L6 in the Bay Area. What do you think? What should I ask for?
Unfortunately, you can't do anything.. you will be in bottom of band after promotion. You can get competing offer and can play dive and save. But be ready to walk away if they don't match
I don’t think you have an option to negotiate. You can be pissed about it and let your manager know. Your manager will then write a doc to raise your salary. In the end, it won’t change significantly. It’s better to start looking somewhere else
Yup, you are at the lowest point of L6 range. Get an outside offer, if you still like your group (and vice versa) you can negotiate a much better counter offer.
I thought the lower range was 250K, maybe that applies only to Seattle?
Same here. $250K is the lowest range as per levels.fyi too https://www.levels.fyi/salary/Amazon/SE/SDE-III/
Same story here. Absolutely no hike after L6 promotion. The responsibilities have increased but not the income. I am sincerely looking outside for a change. The only way Amazon increases only if you get a good offer from outside and your manager does a dive and save.
There is a psychological problem with dive and save. The org did not value u with so much compensation in the first go, so they will always have this in their mind that you are over compensated. They then look for all reasons to go against you including amortizing the value they think they are overpaying you...by not giving you anything in the next few years. I got nothing in my first and second year
Stay in and pivot to another company in a year. ‘You can always trade power for money but seldom money for power.’ Once you’ve worked as an L6 for a year or so other companies will see you as an L6 and much more likely to hire you as one. To me that’s the big value add
Why do you think it’s lower for L6? What is the L6 band in your location? You should consider L6 promotion as going into a band where your tc can go upto 400 based on performance, which is not possible at L5.
Promo is given when u are already proven to be working at the next level, but ur salary is not. So when you get promo one should expect a reasonable salary bump not a silly excuse 'Oh u were already paid high'. The lowest band, just the entry into L6 (barely) is 290k in my area AFAIK.
Dude it sucks but just take the promo. Using a counteroffer to leverage more money is generally bad advice and it’s still more money. You can re-assess after being in role for a while
Core value is be frugal. The longer you stay at AMZN the more underpaid you are, it's because they use a total cash comp targeting system with a very low inflator.
I'm not sure you can ever negotiate promo comp. Imo, your best bet is a finding another company willing to pay you more. "Low balls" only exist if you have a competing offer on the market for more $$
