I moved to management 1.5 years ago and since then my salary increased the way as it would have as an IC, although my workload and level of stress doubled. It feels really unfair, knowingly that you are holding the whole team and eventually the company culture together. I love management, e.g. working with people, the breadth of project planning and execution, helping individuals to grow, and based on feedback from my reports I’m not so bad either. I just don’t think it’s worth of my time/nerve.

What am I not getting here? Any suggestions out there?

Cheers!

I have been managing for 7+ years with 14+ years of experience. It can be challenging at times especially if you haven’t formed rapport with your team yet. It’s worse in Covid times as building trust takes longer.

In the end what keeps me going is being able to work with a wonderful set of people and supporting them in their growth and driving long-term strategy

I feel anything more than 10 people in a flat hierarchy is a bit much. Even if everyone is super independent etc, you still need time and energy to coach/mentor and make sure they are happy and satisfied with the challenges.

If your work doubled you either didn’t work hard enough before or you didn’t learn to be effective manager and delegate yet.

Management is not for everyone. Consider going back to IC.

That’s a very generic statement. I’m definitely considering apart from other things, but I’m still wondering how it makes sense for others. Thanks!

What is unfair about the work you are doing? Are you expecting more TC or that it’s too much stress/work to manage your team?

Thanks for the clarification. How many direct reports are you managing? I’d say for a newly minted manager, 4-6 is a good size. If that’s too much stress/work, then you may want to consider moving back to being an IC.

480 for atlassian is insanely high for the EM, you seem to be overpaid.
