7 years experience, have a graduate degree (but not an MBA) and the position is for director of marketing at a startup- what would be normal base pay and total compensation?
Negotiate hard. Get equity. Startups will pay more in equity.
$150k is about right. Small or no equity is fairly typical.
Word of caution. Don’t get trapped in getting promoted too fast. The average director typically has at least 10 yrs of experience with 6-7 of those in a managerial position (running teams and creating programs). You may be trapped at this start up for the next 5+ yrs as enterprise orgs may see your title as inflated if you try to use it as a stepping stone. I have seen it happen a lot over the last 20 yrs of my career where young people are obsessed with getting the title without properly getting the experience. Then when they want to transition to other orgs, they see that the title doesn’t match years needed. Obviously, everyone is different but just letting you know that drive matched with impatience is a deadly combo. Good luck with the start up!
Young People FTW
140-160k and RSUs depending on employee # in the startup. Total comp approx 280k You will perhaps get more equity than base pay. You can negotiate for performance bonus, which is usually absent in startups - especially in Business roles
Agree. Start ups won't be able to match Google, Facebook, or any established company. But the point of start up is to bet on it's future and get equity.
