Hi guys, just got a Cisco PMT offer and I am looking for tips on how to negotiate salary in a new job when the hiring manager knows my current pay.
And how much over my current pay is an acceptable number? I know that for SWEs, since there exist a lot of open positions at a time, it is super easy to get a competing offer. For PMs, there are handful of opportunities, so walking away will be a difficult decision :)
Your current pay is irrelevant. What would it take for you to get to join? That's the acceptable number. Don't take a poor offer just because you're underpaid now.
How do you determine that number? It's hard to determine what you're worth, because what your worth is what they're ready to pay you.
The number looks right from G9 PM these days (You may get little bit more on signing and RSU) Ping me if you want to know more
What is the law in Seattle area?
If you're desperate to take the role, and not willing to walk, then make the negotiation not about, "what's the lowest you'll take," but about what is a fair and market competitive TC for this role. Do research using sites like Paysa and maybe throw in, " I have some friends in similar roles, which I've taken into account," and give them the number you'd be honestly happy with. Then it's less about what you're currently making, and more about what's market rate.
What's a payscale- do I ask the recruiter for this?
That's what I am trying to get the data for. Thanks for the inputs here!
So why did you disclose your current pay? Did the company ask you to?
Yeah.. In one of the later interviews they asked me about it. Since I shared a rapport, I couldn't not tell.
Wow. The company broke the law. If they asked if you or your wife were pregnant would you have answered? Also you really should learn to thread replies.
I wont have a wife given I am straight and yes, this is my first post, I can definitely learn to thread :)
"I have other offers"
You have to have a number you are looking for, and be willing to walk if you don't get it.
Good advice. The base of good negotiations is being able and willing to say no.
