What's the OTE for Sales Engineers at top tech companies like? TC : 145K
Depends on seniority. There is a big range just like in SWE jobs. Developers have more earning potential then tech sales in software.
For 3 yoe? Approx ?
Devs have more stability than SE and over the long term, will outpace SEs. The problem is that, unless you’re selling a really hot product, it’s hard to maximize OTE and tends to fluctuate depending on factors out of your control
What’s OTE?
Former sales eng at Microsoft, and now @ Google. We carry quotas, and if we do well, then we make a lot more than SEs in bonus/base. That said, from a stock perspective (not the case at MS), SEs usually get 4x years of stock up front, and we don't necessarily get that. That said 4 years in we're at parity at Google from a stock/level perspective.
Thanks for the info. What are SE's at MSFT called? What is the expected OTE for someone with 3 years of experience ?
Could you please explain the requirements to break into a Sales Eng role? I've been interested in tech sales for a while now. A friend of mine broke into a pure sales job at a tech company with an unrelated government consulting background. Is a long tenure in tech required for a sales engineer?

Why some people are more successful than the other?
Wtf is a sales engineer?
They are customer facing Engineers typically in the sales orgs of enterprise cos. They usually get commissions on sales.
They’re very technical salespersons usually. So they’ll sit on calls with sales and attempt to sell the product from a more technical side. They may go into the field to help a prospective customer try the product hands-on, etc. Sometimes they’ll do some scripting to handle customer data as a way to show off the product. Etc.
