What exactly do sales engineers do? I do a ton of fang projects and have considered joining Google cloud team full time as a sales engineer for ML on GCP but was advised to avoid it because sales engineers don't exactly do cutting edge work or something. Any advice is appreciated.
It depends on the company, but normally it’s engineering people with a strong sales acumen and are very good listener. We can switch easily from a tech to a non-tech audience by providing FAB (Feature/Advantage/Benefits) eventually helping closing the deal. I think it’s an awesome job if you don’t want to have to be coding all day but still are required to keep with trends and technology and you want to solve problems from a higher level (very good system design skills - I recommend reading the Grokk course online). selling to innovative company and sit with C-level and tech leads is really empowering and a great learning experience ! Again, I used to be a software engineer but I was missing the human factor, didn’t fell like my data structure really mattered to the world and I just love to prototype ideas or systems.... depends on what you want !
