I've noticed that a lot of companies try to treat SEs like engineers, and have them spend 90% of their time doing things like deployments, PoCs, etc, but IMO this is not good for your career or job security, so you need manage the way you work if you end up working somewhere like that.
As far as breaking in, I think you pretty much just apply for jobs and go from there. In my experience you will know very quickly whether or not you are well-suited for the role. The pre-sales side is very much a meritocracy, which is a big plus if you can perform!
