SalesForce Infra or Oracle OCI

May 19, 2018 141 Comments

Oracle offer: ~330k (190k base + 140k RSU/y) IC4
SalesForce : ~300k (210k base + 30k bonus + 60k RSU/y) LMTS
Both offering around 35k signon.

I know more folks at SalesForce, and there's a good chance I can get promoted in a year (given that I know what I have to do and the work seems quantifiable) - but not a guarantee obviously.

I felt the interviews at Oracle were more challenging though - I know the group has been attracting a lot of good folks of late. But from what I hear, bonuses/increments/promotions are VERY rare/difficult there.

go to Salesforce. Most people at Oracle are incompetent and their “cloud” is a massive joke.

The above customers that I mentioned were prior Salesforce customers. Don’t want to be too specific in which area.
Probably you could check for licenses which didn’t get renewed at the end of this year.

Oracle doesn’t need to win any cloud war. They can stay at #4-5 and still multiply profits as the rest of the 80% of the enterprise migrates.

Depends on what you value more ?
    Learning or promotion/money?

I believe at this stage Oracle is working hard to bring in the best talent and bring some innovation to the cloud suite of apps. I would say learning wise it will be good to join Oracle. I would give it another 2-3 years to see how the whole transformation effort unfolds at Oracle.
One can always switch after a few years if there isn’t any pay hike or promotion or the product isn’t doing well

I worked at both Oracle BMC and Salesforce. Given your situation, I'd go with Salesforce without hesitation for the following reasons: better long term comp (give it a year and you'll see), far better culture and wlf, better career path, less risk, far less politics. Only downside is little to no stock refresh, which will be an issue after fourth year, unless Salesforce fixes this problem by then.

Looks like OCI is run differently though: at least wrt the stocks/RSUs they offer.. which is quite competitive to FANG..

I feel they are not completely invested in oci.. This is like a pet project of Oracle and not sure when they cut it.
