Salesforce PMTS equivalent at Amazon

Feb 7, 2020 10 Comments

Hello! I recently had an exchange with a recruiter from #Amazon. I'm currently happy at my current job at #Salesforce, but since Amazon is a large presence in my city I might be interested in the future.
Recruiter indicated that he thought I'd be a fit for SDE III he has open, which seems quite a bit below my current title of PMTS (comp also would be below my current level from what I've seen on glassdoor). Is this normal? I know the recruiter is trying to fill a job opening but I was surprised. If this is indeed typical can anyone suggest things I could pursue at my current job that would warrant a more lateral title should I want to move to Amazon in the future?

  • I have to admit I'm a bit puzzled about the discrepancy between the salaries suggested here and those reported on paysa/glassdoor. Maybe Amazon comp is just way lower in cities that are not considered high cost areas? Regardless, I think for me the lower title would be a dealbreaker (at least without a VERY large raise). I want my resume to clearly and instantly demonstrate a progression to higher and higher roles. A "senior software engineer" title would take me back to where I was eight years ago from this point of view.
Thanks everyone for the feedback though, interesting stuff.

Amzn levels are wider than sf. Pmts would map to higher end of l6 sde3. Pe at amzn would be software architect at sf. And sde3 comp range can go as high as 410.

  • If you are a very strong PMTS(close to architect promo) and nail the interviews, you’ll get amazon principal (L7). Otherwise most likely you’ll be leveled to top L6. BTW new hire PMTS usually gets 400k+ in high COL areas.

I think SMTS is like amazon 2.5-3.5, and LMTS should be amazon SDE3.5+, according to levels.fyi. But compensation wise, amazon pays external hires with 50% minimum on the range, which will be at least 300k for sde3, all the way up to 410. You can ask your recruiter about the compensation range for a sde3 external hire.
