Salesforce/Etsy offer help
Hi All Torn between these 2 offer. Need some help from the community: both in nyc, 4.5yoe Etsy - 255k tc + 5k relo (senior swe 1) Salesforce - 257k tc (smts) here's what I think so far.. WLB: Salesforce == Etsy Culture: Etsy > Salesforce Benefits: Etsy > Salesforce Refreshers: Etsy >>> Salesforce Team/peers: Etsy > Salesforce Eng bar/brand: Salesforce > Etsy I like everything about Etsy more but my only qualm is working on the php monolith; I'm worried this might make me unmarketable for future senior roles at good companies. Salesforce work would be on Scala microservices and seems to be at larger scale. On the flip side, I'm planning to move to a lcol city in a few years, and not only does Salesforce have 🥜 refreshers, they also have huge pay cut based on geo so huge tc cliff upcoming. Etsy has solid annual stacking refreshers from what I hear and no geo based pay bands. I could always leave sf after 3-4 years but I can see the LC bar being insanely hard by then #salesforce #etsy
etsy is php? never knew that. also it’s a bit glorified. pass neither one is a forever job so don’t agonize
What about stability of the company? I consider that as well, especially in times like these.
sf is definitely more stable, but I'm pretty confident in Etsy as a product and their long term potential
Future roles won't care about your current tech stack
sure. but what about experience with k8s/infra aspect of microservices? With the way everything is moving to self service containerized deploys in the cloud, seems like that would be an important experience to gain
Google doesn't use anything that's industry standard and we do fine in the job market 🤷🏽♂️ Being a good SWE is all about the ability to learn quickly and well. Maybe k8s isn't even the standard in a few years
Culture is great at Etsy but you will do best if you’re very liberal. We say our pronouns before some meetings and you can’t say “you guys”, it’s “y’all”.

There is nothing industry standard at salesforce unless you're joining a recent acquisition who hasn't integrated into core. Everything is overly complex and virtually unrecognizable. When I left salesforce I had no idea kubernetes was easy and works really well. I thought kubernetes/aws/gcp was the worst crap ever made, but it was all because we screwed it up so bad trying to graft a legacy oracle database centric system on top of it. You might as well go do php at etsy.
yes its an acquisition (ExactTarget) that isn't integrated into core.
Stay away from exacttarget. Run don't walk. It's been a dumpster fire for years. DM me if you really want to know.

I’d say don’t go to Etsy because there are so many problems with their service. They canceled customer service line just recently for smaller sellers and do not reply to emails to small sellers at all. All I got is robot-like reply. I don’t know how a platform claims to support indie sellers just completely get rid of the phone line. (In the mean time, they threaten to take money from checking account based on their very biased decisions). Ironically, they also increase the fees for sellers. In the mean time, they allow for sellers to sell fake vintage jewelry from China. I’m considering closing my account permanently after 5 years and personally know many people who decide to have their own website rather than using Etsy. Maybe they will be wish 2.0 or maybe not. But I don’t consider the business as stable.
Can you share about the refreshers? I wasn’t promised any particular amount.
