I'll be working in RWC and looking for advice on where to live. Trying to avoid all the craziness of SF, but don't want to live deep in the suburbs where there's little access to fun stuff (25 and single).

What are some areas that you suggest? From my research, I was thinking about San Mateo and am looking for any South Bay areas that are close to SF, areas in South SF, and areas in SF that haven't turn completely awful.

My priorities are: Fun, walkability, safety/low crime, and quick access to things food/fun/bars/clubs (short drive 15mins is fine). I get it's hard to avoid the poop and SF craziness but looking to minimize that as much as possible if I'm in the city.

QTNA
Is the South Bay as boring as they say?
Thoughts on San Mateo?
Is south San Francisco nice?
If I have to live in SF where should I go?

Thanks in advance for the help everyone!

Just live on top of a hill in SF, the homeless don’t climb hills much. I hate the city but if you’re 25 and single the rest of the Bay Area will be much worse for you.

Live in SF. Homelessness isn't as bad as they make it seem, just avoid places like Hunters Point or the Tenderloin. Walk around the area you plan to rent before signing anything.

This taxes thing is completely blown out of proportion.

Anyway, San Mateo and South Bay are "fine" I guess but it's the burbs. Doesn't matter where you live at that point. If you want to go to SF, live near a BART station or close enough where an Uber/Lyft ride isn't too expensive. You'll want to live in SF though, just makes socializing sooooo much easier. People will actually include you on stuff too, otherwise they'll avoid inviting you as they just think you're too far.

Just live in SF. If you avoid SOMA and TL, rest of the City is AMAZING. Nothing in suburbs will beat North Beach, Marina, Russian Hill, Haight, Richmond, West Mission etc

No Mission Bay is totally fine, although lacks the core character of a true SF neighborhood. SOMA was built to serve mostly the tech community, but now that everyone is WFH, it is empty and can be sketchy in certain parts

Another vote for SF. You’re 25 not 40.

I guess it depends on your expectations and what you want. My husband lived in San Jose when we were dating and he was content with it. His daily life was drive to the gym, drive to work, drive to the store, cook etc. for special fun occasions he could go to the city (which is where I met him). For me daily life was around transit to work, coffee shops and going out a couple nights a week with coworkers. In sf you’ll take busses and ubers and you don’t have to deal with traffic, parking etc if you want to have fun. So when you’re 25 a lot of people would rather trade some weird homeless and poop for the opportunities it provides. I haven’t been in sf awhile but my guess about the complaints is their apartments or offices are in crappy parts of sf. My husbands company moved their office from financial district to mid-market before the pandemic and after the office move all the people in the office protested…the women didn’t feel safe and they could hear homeless screaming all day. Just stay out of the bad areas and it should be ok. One of my younger colleagues moved with his gf to sf during the pandemic from San Jose and he loves it so anecdotally it’s still worth the trade offs.

SF is definitely bad but it’s the only option for a decent social life as a single straight guy in the Bay Area. If you prioritize that and you have any opportunity for remote work, consider not moving to the Bay Area.
