I am thinking if i should move to Canada, due to this H1B non sense. Every time i convince myself, i see a post where people are saying the pay is so low, and the taxes are so high. If i am the only earner in the family, can i possibly save anything? I don’t want to hear how hard it is in Canada, without actual numbers, so if someone is already there, please shed some light on how much you get after taxes, what’s the rent, other expenses, and approx savings that is possible. Interested in knowing about vancouver, but any other city would work, to get some idea. Base - 140k #h1b
Any kids?
Try levels.fyi and search for Canada, you'll see a good number of amazon data points
The number varies a lot there. 100-288 for sde2.
You can definitely save as a single earner. I lived in a small city in Ontario (so not the best example) but total taxes were approximately 40% near the highest tax bracket. I’m cheap so I was able to save 50%+ of my after-tax earnings. Taxes are higher in the country (Ontario is similar to CA taxes) but you get better benefits (healthcare / public education), which may not matter much for you if you’re a young single person. Vancouver is a different beast- I’d recommend you go on rental websites and look up different apartments to see what you’d pay in rent.
Thanks. The rent and property price varies a lot for places there. If I look for a place that is 30-40 mins drive from amazon office, the price doesn’t look that bad, but I have no idea how that locality is. Would prefer a safe neighborhood, but that is hard to tell from here.
The thing with Canada is there’s not many slums. In the US you have lot of duality, either rich ass people living in a gated community or places that you wouldn’t want to walk at night. Vancouver downtown has a couple rough neighbourhoods but as a whole, any suburb is going to be safe and pleasant. Not something you have to worry about as much in Canada.
OP, you can DM me, I am in Amazon Vancouver.
Will Amazon transfer to Canada?
I believe they do. They definitely transfer you if you are facing visa issues in the states. If you want to initiate it I guess you need to find a team there, but that generally is not a problem.
Numbers - ~200k CAD TC, after tax and various deductions ~9000 monthly Food ~1k Rent ~2k Drink and fun ~1k Dumb purchases ~1k Save rest Single and no kids
SDE II with 140k as a TC, bro you are fucked up!
That’s the base pay. Waiting for this year pcs to know what my TC is according to amazon.
Median salary for SDEII in vancouver is hardly 100k CD per glassdoor.ca 😗
Not real, SDEI make more than that
After a year and half in Canada I came out with negative balance (didn't spend too much, but shit everything is expensive, and going home to Europe few times a year costed me the whole salary). Now in the US, I managed to save almost 100k in 6 months. And that's all in the same company. F*** Canada.
Can you give some more information about your TC and expenses.
90k CAD, taxes are high, so 2k a month on rent, food is generally expensive, car insurance is high (monopol). Of 5.5-6k net a month 3.5-4k probably just goes to basic stuff (bills, groceries, gas). You could save <2k a month if not spending on anything else, but if you go somewhere and travel occasionally long distance (few times a year) that will be negative balance. Also had to pay doctors few thousand dollars for MRI and exams one time because healthcare waiting time was a month long.
Savings will be less but quality of life will be up. You chose
