Saying no to an accepted offer after promotion at current job

I had accepted an L4 offer @ Google HW in July, with a start date of November (waited for the Apple October vest and bonus). This review cycle, I got promoted to ICT4 at Apple, with really good numbers (exceeds in all areas). Now ICT4 is (quasi)-terminal level in Apple, unlike Google, where I need to fight for T5 promo. Also the comp for next year is substantially higher at Apple @ 330k vs ~290k at Google. I believe the average ICT4 refresher at Apple (@ ~120k) is also higher than Google T4 (esp. HW) refresher. Because of all these reasons, I am reluctant to go to Google and had a few questions: 1) Is there a way to reneg the on the Google offer without burning bridges? 2) Is it possible to use the Google offer to ask for more dough from Apple, or will it be perceived negatively, especially coming immediately after a promo. I'm on great terms at Apple, with our Sr. Director personally knowing me and my work. So I have good bargaining power at Apple I think, but don't want to spoil long term prospects for a few grand. Planning to pitch this as a request for more cash rather than a counter offer. Would really appreciate any feedback from the community. TC (2018) 290k @ 4 YOE.

Just be honest about it. You got a promo and it no longer makes sense to join Google from a financial perspective. They will understand or give you a better offer

And definitely don't bring it up at Apple at this point. It's in Google's court right now.

I agree with above, you have good numbers at Apple, don’t spoil ur relationship by mentioning Google. Work to get good refresh next year

That is pretty good for IC4 at Apple with 4 yoe. What is the range for L5 hardware at google

not sure, but I heard refresher is lower than Apple for HW. ICT4 refresher in our team averages 120k-140k at Apple.

Google changed promotion rules and L4 is now terminal. Just in case that carries a large weight in your decision.

Thanks for the info. That's not ideal for me either, because I would rather coast as an ICT4/T5, than coast as a T4.

Curious to know your final decision and how you talked with Google

What does "terminal" mean?

Broadcom Ltd. rFkd21 Oct 9, 2018

Terminal means the level is the highest that most people will be promoted to. A few will be promoted higher.

stay at Apple, if you go to google you need to build the trust from ground up for a year or so, moreover if the tc is also lower there is no point in going to google.
