The title says it all. Have this hidden phobia ever since i started driving. Was ok till now since i was in a small city with minimal traffic and could avoid highways. Now, i am moving to a big city and have no choice but face my worst fear. Please suggest how i can overcome this and become confident on highways
Just relax and close your eyes. You'll be fine.
Man, thats dark!
Get a Tesla with autopilot. 😉 Joking aside, consider taking a driving class. Many places have instructors with behind the wheel sessions for adults who need to build more confidence on the highway.
AP just seems to piss people off because of the gap it leaves even with distance set to 1. Everyone needs to be .01mm bumper to bumper People cutting around me all over the time. Can’t tell if the car is spamming the brake lights or what. But I just take a nap now.
I used to have this when I first moved to CA. When I pass a truck, I used to get so nervous but, I learned to focus on my lane rather than what’s in my next lane. Same issue when going in a single lane road where there is no divider between the lanes separating the oncoming traffic. I stopped focusing on the oncoming traffic and focus on staying in my lane.
^^^ This worked for me too
I don't know your particular situation, but anecdotally a lot of friends who feared driving on the highway now enjoy driving on it rather than inner cities after a few times, my wife included, so give it a shot with a instructor few times ...
Yeah I used to avoid driving downtown cause I got so nervous and after a few times it was totally fine
As with everything else, practice is the key. Practise on highways during odd hours when the traffic is less. Take someone with you when you practise.
Honestly it's scarier to drive in the local streets....at least you have less jaywalkers and double parking. But by all means, it doesn't hurt to get a coach to drive with you for a few sessions to get yourself more comfortable
Take defense driving. Until then stay out of the fast lane.
The only way you will overcome this fear is by doing it. Try a couple of times in non- peak hours maybe and then with someone in the next seat.
I had this fear always, the only thing that helped me was driving in freeways frequently. During holidays, i drove all the way from SAn Diego to SF without any stop. My husband encourages me
honestly, see a psychologist. they will be able to help you better than anyone on blind.
