As a new grad, I see lot of my college friends learning data science but when it comes to jobs, they seem to not find any relevant jobs..They'd rather stick to software development. Do you see the same trends everywhere? Note- friends are mostly international students.
Probably more to do with the fact that companies are more willing to hire swe out of school than DS (just my observation)
+1 . . . . I see all ds switching to swe while looking jobs...Maybe pursuing ds would be a future task then..
Way more jobs for SWE and higher pay. As a DS, knowing what I know now, I would have definitely picked SWE if I had the opportunity to start over.
Bar for an actual ds is high... college grads dont meet it more often..
Only pick DS over SWE if you think you’d hate SWE work and really love DS work. Financially it doesn’t make sense to pick DS over SWE. Also if you’re an international/ on some sort of visa, MUCH safer bet to be an SWE.
Heck, I hate SWE but I'm still doing it for the money. DS work is a little less painful for me, but it is much less fun when you think about how much money you're losing by doing it lol.
