Am I fucked up? (TC is ~220k = base 166k, rsu 25k, bonus ~30k)

Dec 31, 2021 22 Comments

Lucky you all.
I have 11 yoe, as HW engineer
my base is 166k, my rsu is 25k per year!!! And bonus is 20% (if they give)
I am a reliability engineer (four years of experience) and was process engineer in foundry (7 years of experience)
I have lots of patents, I feel bad that I am treated like shit!

Looking at all TCs being shared here, I feel I'm so fucked up by my current employer ....

Started looking for jobs....hope I can also get into HW departments (Google, apple, Facebook)

Sorry but fresh PhDs are getting better offers now. Companies like AMD and Intel are offering very competitive salaries nowadays w.r.t. FAANG. So, keep your options open and interview everywhere.

I saw mainly in ML HW and Architecture. But I am sure there has been a significant bump up for HW salaries as almost every big tech company is building their own HWs.

Fresh HW engineers are getting more if they go to software companies

Apple has lots of open Reliability and Silicon Eng positions. Both orgs pay well (caveat: not great WLB). Over years, RSU appreciation and refreshers will increase your TC.

    • I realized I have applied for total of 11 position at apple, over the past ten days, and I hope I can get into one. A recruiter called me for a position to schedule a phone interview with HM, I confirmed the time and he never got back to me
I like to assume that was due to the holidays

Meanwhile a HM directly called me for a position and we talked for an hour and things went well
At the end he said he wanted to confirm that I was ok with reloc....I was surprised as I realized he was not the person I was waiting for and indeed I had never applied for the position he interviewed me for ,

It’s never too late to get your TC that you deserve. Many folks still don’t know what is possible. You made a great step in knowing how low you are paid and can thus take action. One friend of mine refused to move to Bay Area due to cost of living and was happy with $100k in low cost of living and stayed that way for 8 years after I left. Only now is he seeing that you can make $400-500k and he got an offer at apple and is moving to Bay Area now. His current tc is still just $190k but at apple he will make $350k

    • Wow....I'm in Bay area too...now I realize why the property sale price is increasing like hell...ppl have tones of money
I hope I can make it to apple
One reason is for sure money, as I have responsibilities...
Main reason is I see no place for personal career growth in my current work place, so, I don't want to be regretful in couple of years, when I pass 40
