Assuming a TC of 200k in Seattle, what would it's equivalent for Bay Area(specifically if someone would rent in and around San Jose/Sunnyvale). I know for sure that it should at least 10% more because of the state income tax. So not including that option. Edit #1 Using online tool like nerdwallet highly bloats up, since it factors a 2 bhk apartment in San Francisco which is around 4000/month. But for San Jose area I guess we can get a decent one for 3000/ month, while in Seattle we can get it for probably 2500-2800 per month. Edit #2 I am waiting for an offer, so wanted to know what would be the equivalent of 200k Seattle TC to California TC. Blind Tax: TC: 200k
At FB/Meta, there's a 15% delta between Bay Area and Seattle
No it’s 5 percent. Why you sharing misinformation with such confidence 15 percent is from Bay Area to some LCOL
Well then that's new as of a few months ago. Was at FB Bay Area for 7 years.
Crunch the numbers for your lifestyle for the next few years. I'd say a simple calculation is to only look at post tax income since you are gonna rent and it's almost equal. So 200k in Seattle is 144k post tax that needs 235k in CA. Most companies give a 10% base bump for CA. I know Amazon and Salesforce do. So for single income earners, you would get a 15k bump if your base was 150k. So 215k TC which is 135k post tax. So 9k less savings every year. I'd take it for the sunshine and better opportunities in CA. Note this assumes single income and no house buying. Calculating rent difference and other small things is petty and will be a less than 5k delta.

The end of Backdoor Roth?!
Your TC will not go up if you move, since both cities are in the same CoL bracket at almost all tech companies. If you’re asking how CoL actually differs between the two cities, that’s a complicated question to answer!
I am waiting for an offer so wanted to know what would be 200k Seattle TC equivalent in the Bay Area.
Thats not true. Bay area used to be considered HCOL than Greater Seattle. Even though Greater Seattle is becoming more expensive day by day, I think most companies still consider (and they should) Bay area HCOL compared to Greater Seattle.
