Seattle vs BayArea

I have two offers Big 4 (Seattle) vs FinTech Company (Bay Area). I currently live in BayArea (wife and 2 kids). Taking relocation of the family to Seattle and start a new life leaving the social circle, which would be the better offer? Seattle Offer 315K - 190k /25K/400k (4 years vest) - Role: IC Bay Area Fintech Offer 340K - 230k/40K bonus /275K (4 years vest) - Role: Director Both are cloud companies. What do you suggest? DIRECTOR (BayArea) VS IC (Seattle)

If you want good weather, pick Bay area. If you want cheaper rent, pick Seattle

If you want "slightly" cheaper rent

Microsoft Pubgesus Feb 2, 2020

WAY cheaper rent. It's easily 30-40% cheaper here. Also, 9% less taxes

I want to buy a house and only question is should Director vs IC

Depends on what you want to do long term. Since you applied to a director role, what changed now?

Informatica WDRz44 OP Feb 2, 2020

I am a director currently in Bay Area. Got an offer for IC which is also a good cloud product which they are building ground up. I want to eventually go to a management role long term.

Unless you are up for going through the process of climbing the chain again, I would stick with the director role based on long term plans.

Your post is confusing. Director role is in Seattle or Bay Area ? If you could mention the company names its easy to advise on role. Better quality of life I would say Seattle. Better weather I would say Bay Area.

What’s a Big 4?

Microsoft Pubgesus Feb 2, 2020

I'm guessing he means big 4 accounting: pwc, delloite, kpmg, ey

Gotcha. Thanks.

Cost of Living is pretty similar - your $40K extra TC in Bay Area likely covers the difference.

Microsoft Pubgesus Feb 2, 2020

If you think it's similar is because you have never lived in Seattle.

eBay QCgd36 Feb 2, 2020

“Bay Area” is dozens of cities - but it’s around 20% more - the Bay Area offer is stronger with more of the comp is guaranteed money vs stock, better title, no relocation costs - is that better?

I would stay in Bay Area. Moving social circle is worth a lot of money to me. Yeah you can “make friends” but damn is that a pain in the ass especially with the Seattle freeze. Also consider would it be easy for your wife to make friends as well.

Use the Seattle offer to increase bay area offer.

These are equivalent offers after California tax. Tough call on career path. Vote stay in Bay. Reporting higher numbers has more utility than tax considerations to me.
