It appears that a lot of tech companies and recruiters simply look for candidates from same pool. So google poaches from Fb, Fb poaches from snap etc. What's your reco for someone mid 30s in digital marketing to get into one of these larger tech companies. I've tried just simply applying and get told I don't have the relevant experience, when I try for a low level, I hear you are overqualified. What aspect of tech or what types of tech companies would be good to consider to get in the door? Thx Interested in product or marketing but really willing to try any angle just to move into tech. Have worked with non profits, legal, restaurants and entertainment. Thank you for your insight and recos.
Start as a temp/contractor. It’s relatively easy to get in that way and then, once you’re in, you can make the connections you need to make a conversion to FTE likely and easier to navigate.
Don’t shoot for the moon right away. Try to identify who the companies are that the big fish are hiring from. What mid tier, pre-IPO startups are on the rise but not yet well known? Apply there, get the experience in a hyper growth environment, then apply to the giants
Are you getting referrals? Either look for jobs at companies where you know someone, or find a 2nd degree connection on LinkedIn and politely ask for an informational interview or some coaching. If they like you, ask for a referral. Referrals let you get past the first stage where a recruiter or an algorithm glances at your resume and throws it away for not having the right buzzwords. You can get into an interview with someone in your actual field and show them why they should be excited about your.
Domain knowledge, be an expert in it, be a specialist.
I second starting as a contractor. I took that route, and while you pay your dues for a while you make connections and have more visibility into available roles.

If you EVER get a response that you're overqualified, you need to shoot higher. If a recruiter gives you that feedback, they're coaching you. You're undervaluing yourself.
Or you’re “too old,” sadly
