currently a sr. TPM at microsoft , my dev counter part loves my techincal skills and offered me a senior SDE position. I also got an Amazon TPM offer. TC’s are irrelevant as I am happy with what i make or will make in any of the two positions. Should I ask Amazon for an SDM position in stead of TPM or just accept the Sr SDE postion at Microsoft. Exp: 15= 13 yrs with a startup as a dev manager and 2 yrs at MSFT as senior TPM. reason to switch: was missing coding in life.
I'd always go for SDE.
Msft
You will not code as either tpm or sdm
If you’re missing coding life, isn’t obvious answer the SDE role? As someone else stated, TPM and SDM do not code.
I thought SDM’s do code. At least here at MSFT in my team, they do hash out codes 30% of the time. Interesting to know they don’t code at AMAZON. I would think that would be team specific.
Most SDMs do not code, although there is nothing preventing them if they’re able to and want to do it. If you’re team was delivering and you were coding, I think you’d definitely stand out. Definitely ask them to consider for SDM. Be sure to pitch your previous mgr experience as that could be the difference between them saying you only qualify for TPM
Looks like the general consensus is senior SDE at MSFT. If that’s the case then I am not losing anything , asking Amazon to consider me for a SDM role and see what happens. At least I will be close to the code and can review it. TC’s discussion will start at that time. Will let this thread know how my Amazon discussion go.
TC is always relevant for Blind. Give us the details and we will chime in.
