A recruiter reached out to me from Bloomberg, fed me the “doing aggressive hiring” line, and offered to setup an interview for a senior software engineer position. Professionally, I’m coming up on 2 years of experience as of graduation. And as a student, I did multiple internships and ran major student orgs on campus for several years. To me, this doesn’t really add up to “senior” engineer status considering how much I still feel like I need to be exposed to. Does this type of thing happen from time to time at Bloomberg and/or generally speaking? Do you think that maybe my recruiter misread my resume? Or maybe Bloomberg is just betting that the only way to steal someone from the Valley to work on FiTech is to offer them senior level positions? Would love to hear insights :)
It's Bloomberg...
Most likely the recruiter is just blowing smoke up your ass and you will get an offer for SDE 2 equivalent.
Probably just didn't look too much into your background before sending out a most likely generic email. If you interview and get an offer it most likely won't be for a senior position.
Bloomberg promotes to senior engineer after 1-2 years. Look it up. It’s just their title inflation
not true. In fact if you started off as junior they never even mention the notion of senior to you, let alone promote you to it no matter how long you are there. It's all part of the "no job title culture so everyone is equal" aka no career path from Mike Bloomberg.
Bloomberg hires only two types of Engineers. Juniors, generally via the campus recruitment programs, or Seniors. Once you have 2 years experience you are hired as a senior. When it comes to your performance in the role, you'll be measured against the expectation of a senior engineer (as defined by Bloomberg) and your peer group of all Senior Software Engineers. So, in that regard, you probably will still be treated relatively junior compared to your peer group.
Anything with 2+ experience could be considered as senior if the candidate is good(this depends on the department/areas). A few departments are open to hiring 2 years exp folks as seniors while some departments are not open to it). With 2 years of experience generally you could opt for the junior hire program too ( which consider everyone with less than 3 years exp) - but as senior you could expect a better pay package if you make it
And yes like someone above pointed it out - we do not have levels at Bloomberg.. anyone with more than 2 / 3 yrs of experience to 40 years is considered a senior
I think they're just a poor recruiter.
Potentially, yeah.
