I spoke with a LinkedIn recruiter today and he mentioned that there is a Sr Engineer role and staff engineer role. He mentioned that staff engineer is more like a team lead and manager . He sometimes codes but also involved in leadership activities. I graduated in 2009 and later got a masters. I am a tech team lead at my present work. Do you think my experience is enough to go for a staff engineer role ? The recruiter has given me some time to think about it and reply. Is there pay difference between these two roles ?
From what Iāve seen, thereās not much point in applying senior roles at LinkedIn. They can always lower the offer to senior level at offer stage when you apply for staff. The chance that youāll be offered to re-interviews for staff after applying for senior is slim.
From your info in the original post, itās not clear whether Senior or Staff is best. It depends on how significant your accomplishments and experience as tech lead at your current company are. Some Senior Engineers are tech leads on minor projects also, so it depends. I suggest interviewing for Staff but donāt be put off if you are offered Senior. Comp for Staff is higher but comp for Senior can be very good also.

I got a staff interview coming up, it's scheduled for 2 hours.. one for tech and the other for leadership.
So I assume the ranking is like so: 1. Software engineer 2. Sr software engineer 3. Staff engineer 4. Sr staff engineer 5. Principal engineer Does it look correct ?

Yes go for Senior Staff Engineer at LinkedIn. Just rock your interviews and you should be good. LI inflates titles and so take at least Senior Staff Engineer and may be aim for Principal. Pay š° would be decent
False. This is fake news. It is very hard to get hired in at Senior Staff, and forget about Principal Staff unless you have a long list of distinguished accomplishments at major tech companies.
