I am starting to interview outside of Netflix for senior engineering manager roles. What can I typically expect in terms of comp? I know I am already doing well in terms of comp and pretty satisfied. I am curious if other companies can easily match it. I am looking for a change as I have been at Netflix for some time. What is the target comp for M2 at Facebook? What would be the equivalent at Google? Is director role at Amazon too much of a stretch? Currently managing other managers TC - 625k YOE - 7
How many people reporting to you directly or indirectly?
2 managers and 1 engineer. Total org ~18
These many reports usually are very close to the lower bound for L7 at Amazon but generally for more seasoned L7s you are expected to lead 25+ with at least 6 directs of your own. For L8s or Directors you are looking at close to 100+.
Yoe - 7?? Umm, and you're M2? How is that even possible? I know Netflix have their own criteria, etc.. but still can't get your case (like 7 years after college and M2 level??)
It’s not the most natural path. I was at the right place at the right times
Facebook, amazon and Google has m2 at level 7. They should be able to match the salary.
Your career path will be interesting to learn from. Please share details of how you achieved this in 7 yoe
Wow
Could you please confirm if your TC is what you make per year or if it includes stocks, etc. and is your YOE as an M2 or in total?
You cant plausibly interview for L8 tech leadership at Amazon with 7 years of experience. If you have a masters or PhD plus 7 YOE then L7 seems reachable but super challenging because of the breadth of leadership experience interviewers will be looking for.
You are a god. Please tell us about how you got to where you are.
No god by any means. Just worked hard day and night, weekdays and weekends. It’s important to work on things you are passionate. FWIW, I don’t care about WLB. I jumped in and did all the work when everyone around me complained about poor wlb
How did you do this in 7 years? Are you like 29? Please share your career path, also will you marry me? Lol
Yes, 29 this year. Lol, already happily married. Maybe next life?
Don’t go anywhere
