Senior positions - Career Development

In the latest years I have been growing my influence exponentially in hardware/Software mix. Transitioning from software engineer to software engineering manager, also driving hardware design programs to product manager to driving corporate level initiatives. I wouldn't call myself software engineer or hardware engineer anymore of course as I have 8+ years of people management and I mostly deliver through other people or infleunce. I have tons of experience in both HW/SW processes and individual/managers management/leadership and matrix management with great soft and influence skills and proven results. Lately, I have been looking around to move to Google however seems like i dont fit the regular SWE template. And seems like the major fits are at Program Management ladder (High L6-L7). Talked to 3-4 directors at Google, however no onsite process yet. Some suggested taking the senior TPM route to establish technical knowledge vs Senior PgM. Google Directors admit they like my profile and would like me on board but seem to be helpless in driving this to materialize compared to other companies because of the HC process and the harder process to hire senior managers to Google. So even if a hiring manager really wants they cant really force the hire. Never got a reject from any director. I am wondering what is the best way to approach the process for managerial positions at Google? Should I develop PgM professional certification? Pivot toward SWE management? Other.. Any fellow senior managers having the same debates or made the transition to Google from non Faang company? Looking for serious advice.. 16 YOE. TC 450k.

Your too old, google wants smart kids only. A programmer in his mid 30’s is like a whore who turns 30. Fort to be the boss - learn ancient Chinese war strategy. People want you low.

I doubt that for managerial positions that have minimum requirement of 7 year people management etc..for SWE I do agree with you.. however L6+ would require the age...

If you're looking for "serious advice" why on earth did you come to Blind?

Cadence artist- OP Sep 13, 2018

There are serious people around here.

Microsoft DOyu71 Sep 13, 2018

Perhaps. That is not the same as getting serious advice though.

Like you have noticed, Google process is template-based for hiring engineers with non-specific skills. The process doesn't extrapolate too well for manager roles. There are hypothetical questions which only focus on solving worldwide scale (web traffic) problems and rarely any other kind. Unless you get an opening in one of the questions, you may not be able to showcase your other experience. You can't change much else.

Agreed. This is my experience too. But I am sure some cracked the method for non SWE managerial positions.. trying to reach them to learn

Oracle fx1 Sep 13, 2018

But do you want to take that chance and get a non-tech role in your profile? Good luck!

Are you sure they want you as bad as they say? I've never seen a hiring manager not be able to hire who they want?
