The two-pizza team rule is racist
201k base 5k signon (wtf? Why even? Is this common?) 0.07% equity valued at roughly 60k 20 yoe but spent many years resting and vesting due to family/kids, also have multiple offers incoming including amazon (no numbers yet, still 1 more interview to determine L5 vs L6) Base is high but equity seems low for a senior/staff SWE at a recent series A Comments?
20 yoe targeting Staff position, and you are contemplating an L5 at Amazon? Tell them to gtfo with even considering an L5 position for 20 yoe. People with 1.5 yoe getting L5 now-a-days, total BS to get it at 20 yoe Also 0.07% worth 60k meaning rough Series A valuation is 100M ? Let's consider the upside where the valuation increases to 1BN or 10BN, in that case your equity is 600k (sounds right for Staff level) or 6MN (IPO jackpot). Keeping these numbers in mind, do you forsee the company to reach a 1Bn+ evaluation?
Yeah normally this is true, but I rested and vested at salesforce with 0 large scale architecture leadership projects to my name. That being said I crushed the L5 interview and just have a 1 hour interview left to qualify for L6. The market niche is compelling and they should do well.
you forgot dilution. under 300k
L5 Amazon with 20 yoe sounds like a joke.
It's what I interviewed at with no special prep. Should qualify for L6, but unless I get a really good team match, I'll just use this as a negotiation tool.
So even L6 at Amazon is too junior for 20yoe imo. But please check as it is also terminal role/a wide band.
Base is not bad for a Series A at your level, but equity should definitely be higher, more like 0.2%.
Hiw many employees at Series A? Will you be within the first 20?
Within the first 30 I believe.
pretty low. either they are super stingy or you didn’t really hit it off with them
L5 at AMZ is a joke with your work ex. However , a L6 with not significant large scale architecture experience might be hard to pull through POST interview ! Expectations are high at L6. What org are you considering at AMZ?
I wasn't seriously considering amazon at all, so don't know yet. I didn't interview for a specific team but had 2 HM interviewers try to sell me on their teams during the onsite. If I clear L6 I'll seriously take a long look around to make sure I land somewhere good. If not I'm just using the offer to negotiate elsewhere anyways. Edit to add that it seems my system design interviews cleared the L6 bar so I guess learning all about what NOT to do architecturally at salesforce helped.
At series A it’s impossible to predict any kind of exit and hence you should value equity a 0. So only join if you vibe with the people and would enjoy the work. If you are just looking to sell your time to the highest bidder, FAANG is the way to go. That said, you could definitely try and negotiate higher equity.
When you join a series A more than the TC , your belief and how well you relate to companies cause and values matters more . Odds of you making more in FAANG are higher , you will be happier in this startup if you love the space , people and job . Exit is an outcome that will take care of itself if you enjoy the ride .
