Expecting an offer for a Head of Product role (first PM) from a Series A startup. what would be a reasonable expectation for base salary and equity (% of company)? Currently at Square. TC ~$420k. 9 YOE.
Latest valuation? # of employees?
I would be surprised if you can get over $150k base for that at a series A. Try to negotiate hard on equity
How much is good equity
Dude. You'll be paid in IOU aka stock options. These stock options is a bs financial instrument. These are more risks associated with stock options than with stocks. What I mean is that there is a possibility of successful exit, which
Bro he's a 9 yoe at square, which went through all this... I think he's looking for numbers, not concepts.
He has 9 years of experience. Does not mean he spent it all at square. He might come when hm they are already IPOed and he has no idea what he is signing up for.
TC at startup?
I was told ~200k base for a startup as a senior PM. Negligible bonus, didn't get to equity. Also, never be their first PM hire. :)
Why never be the first PM hire?
The founders have been driving the vision and roadmap. This is giving up a critical part of their control. At best, you will spend a ton of time clashing, aligning, being vetoed, and micromanaged before getting to do the real job of CPO. Most likely the founders can't handle it, and swap you out for a Jr. PM or a new head of product so they can reboot with more maturity. What do I know. YMMV.
Update: offer came through at $175k base and 0.5% equity. They raised $15M in their Series A.
Is it 0.5% of the issued and outstanding or fully diluted shares? Guess the usual vesting style of 4 yrs with 1st year cliff? Also the usual 90 days option expiration after termination?
15 million * 0.5% = 75k! Seems stupid
I wouldn’t leave your job for this OP. Startups are flopping like pancakes
What’s the industry? Did you end up taking the offer?
Nowhere near that
