Serving a design language

Amazon / Design *_^

Designers at Google, Facebook, Apple, Airbnb, DropBox...obviously you have established design languages that guide what you do. However, do you have to present every project you do to a central panel or team that will approve or reject your work? Like—do you have a multi-step approval process to get things done?

No central approval either. Other structures are in place: 1) internal site for docs with guidelines, 2) ambassadors embedded in all business units, 3) weekly open office for check ins, 4) slack goalie channel, 5) figma/slack plug in that syncs libraries and lastly 6) a dedicated design ops team that can help “productionize” designs to meet component spec as a service. That team sits adjacent to our DLS team.

We’re fortunate to have leadership that advocates and sponsors this type of investment.

We have a scorecard for scoring how well you're following the system but it's not part of an approval process

Here depends one the product (every product is different). In our team we usually don’t need to. We just do self checks.

No central approval panel at Google. Team specially each one might have their own approval process though.

No central approval. We do have review meetings as well as checkins.. but no real approvals required...
That said.. folks can request deep dives to review our plans and provide critique.
And we also present to our principal engineers occasionally to get their approval of it is a big impacting project

Do you have a central “design language” team? Like Amazon has one and they want to see and approve everything and it’s insipid and bureaucratic.

And good that you get time with the PE’s. That’s great.
