Setting up team culture for a HW/SW start up

Sep 18, 2016 4 Comments

I recently left Microsoft to join a hardware OEM startup. I find this world very different, particularly with the involvement of sourcing components and "component owners".

We are trying to set up the team culture and structure. I assume a lot of you work with Hardware and Software. Typically, in the software world, the Product Manager owns the delivery and is accountable. How is it done for products where there are a lot of hardware dependencies across multiple components and each of the experiences have product managers?

Would love to get suggestions from the community. Thank you.

Usually program manager at hardware level does not pick major components at all. They rather manage supply chain and schedules. Pm me if you want more info.

  • Have worked as a product manager for a consumer electronics company for 8 years. Don't fully understand the question. There shouldn't be anything different. Dependencies exist regardless of it being SW or HW. The only difference I can think of on this day in age is that HW Product manager should be accountable for not only the launch but also the sales numbers.
