I have joined here recently and there is a constant pressure to perform. I don't think i am made for this. I wake up randomly at night and the only thought in my mind is work. I wake up in morning thinking about work. After waking up at 7 till 10.30 stand up, i am in state of constant panic and have heart palpitations. And they constant fear of pip makes me not able to work. I am working for 6 years and was never like this before joining Amazon. I don't know what to do. Is it me who is not able to perform or deal with situation. Honestly, i feel i am not good enough to be here and will be booted out soon. What should I do to get some mental sanity back. How should I deal with this. #mentalhealth
I’ve heard different variations of this from a few friends who worked at Amazon. They all ended up leaving eventually...your mental health is more important. At the end of the day, you can always find another job. Stay positive and strong. Good luck!
Imposter Syndrome and pressure to perform are pretty standard early on. Take inventory of your skills comparable to your team members. You may have anxiety outside of the professional context and it’s manifesting now. Unless your manager is an asshole, express this in a 1:1 to get the reassurance that you need.
Dont say anything to your manager. He will use it against you or atleast create an impression of you which will be difficult to overcome if incase you end up staying longer
This is not true in my experience but then again neither are most of the posts about Amazon here so....
Being a tenured Amazonion, I will suggest make your skin thick. Just focus on your sprint tasks & projects, dont care much about PIP. Fear of PIP will only take you near to it. Amazon has a day 1 culture with leadership principles embedded in every amazonion. You will find difficult in begining but slowly you will start enjoying it.
Lol you mean its slow death.. stop listening to this fool OP.. leetcode and get out asap
Ex Amazonian here: OP , I really feel for you and i can understand what you are going through. I would suggest , just start preparing and leave. Amazon is not worth it. The way some Amazonians glorify this Day 1 culture is pure BS.
Try to complete the tasks assigned to you one way or the other. You can seek help from teammates or others to get the direction when you are stuck. Just dont get stuck and do nothing. As long as you constantly try to make progress, you would not be perceived as a slacker.
Get your resume shiny and get out to a new job now. Taking action will make you feel better as you are actively working on an escape. Amazon does have some major issues with its PIP culture and its resultant backstabbing environment. Dont use that Amazon laptop for anything personal at all and keep your job search separate and confidential. Try to build up a rainy day fund from your monthly wages so you feel more relaxed about having a financial safety net. Get working on that escape plan with maximum effort ASAP.
Been there. Exactly same as you when I joined Amazon and had 6 years of experience. Amazon stressed me out so much and I was in the same stage of mental disarray, so much so that I became depressed and constantly worried about getting PIP’d. Working all hours and eventually actually did end up getting PiP, which was shocking as it was my first but I failed upwards and increased my salary by 50% with the next gig (not uber). Looking back, it was a real blessing that I got let go, it’s really not for everyone. And it’s not you that sucks. I know it’s hard to believe now but trust me things will get better. It’s like Steve Jobs said: you can only connect the dots looking backwards. Also look on the bright side, having this “failure” will make you stronger later. Since Amazon set the bar for a toxic work environment, I am able to gauge how good I have it, even at Uber it’s not that bad. TC at Amazon: 150k. TC now: $590k
Which level at Uber ?
L5, stocks have been doing well
Hi, what level and job title did you join at Amazon?
Learn how to breathe. Try wim hof Amazon is a shithole, but this problem is about you. Teach yourself how to handle stress, pressure, anxiety
Leave, it's not worth losing your sanity over.
