I’ve been asked to share any relevant data points to help HR come up with a compensation package for me. Current Netflix employees — if you were asked to do this too, what data points did you share, other than current TC range and/or competing offers?
Where are you based at and where is the employer based at? Massachusetts, California, nyc and few other states/ legislations have clearly outlined that prospective employers have no legal right to ask an prospective employee about previous salary...it has to be purely offered on qualifications and capabilities.
FYI they didn’t explicitly ask for the data points I listed. They just asked me to share any data points I think would be relevant. Im under the impression that they have other resources too.
Share nothing!
We do this every year, all employees. Talk to friends in the industry. It’s not a question about what your current salary is, but instead, what your expectations are. If you want a big number and have some Comp data from another person/position and you could realistically be a candidate for that job, things will work in your favor. It can only help your case. We do not lowball or adjust our number that we come up with if you don’t bring any comparisons to the table. I’m not HR but I manage a team and have hired many people over the years. I’ve never had anyone be disappointed with an offer.
Really appreciate this! I assumed that providing a few data points could only help by setting some expectations, so it’s refreshing to get your take.
I actually love when members of my team bring a higher data point than I already have. There is nothing better than every member of your team knowing they would not make more money anywhere else. Happiness yields productivity.
It’s their legally ok way of asking your current comp. just state your expectations and not share current comp
Not really. We actually want to find out where your top of market is. Very rarely is that number your current comp, aside from a very small set of companies.
It's totally acceptable not to provide anything, but it can be only help you if you have, for example, a competing offer. Nflx will likely top it. I didn't provide any data points, and Netflix offered me double what I was expecting.
Awesome, thanks!
Do they negotiate ?
They can’t legally ask your current salary for California. Just quote them some offers off blind

Is “design kubernetes” a fair sys design question for new grad?
I wouldn’t because they’re asking for competitive intel. They should pay for market analysis.
