I need some entertainment. Gonna start shit talk of the week. SJW, white supremacists, and anyone in between is welcome here. BUT snowflakes GTFO, this is not for you. It's gonna get rough snowflake!!! Today we're gonna shit talk about companies like Uber, Lyft, Doordash and their gig workers. Do you think gig workers should be given employee rights and deserve better treatment? I'll shit talk and rock the boat. I'll say no. Why? - If you want better wage learn a real skill or develop a real business and earn proper money like everyone else. This is not communist China/Russia. If your life sucks, that's on you. We reward people in society based on their value. - Back in 2012? there was so much hype over be an Uber driver and earn $100k and be your own boss. Even back then I can tell it's a stupid short term move. No bails out. If you quit your nice corporate for Uber, you're an idiot. Choices have consequences. - Uber drivers and gig workers are by definition contractors and they do not deserve FTE benefits. Fucking courts are biased. They have no fixed hours, can work for competitors, how the fuck is that a FTE? - Uber and similar companies are bleeding cash fast. If we give FTE benefits that will accelerate their demise. Remembers we're all techies here, we must support our own people! - Lots of people shit talk Uber, but then forget about taxi medallion system which was just as bad for the drivers. But Uber is so much better than taxi for the consumers. So overall it's better.
Some fun facts for you: Drivers value flexibility above all else, other than raw pay. AB5 eliminates that. ~75% of drivers already have health care through their other employer or family member. A survey of 734 drivers showed more then 70% do not want to be classified as employees. 86% of drivers in CA drive less than 20 hours a week. The proposal by gig economy companies to create a pool of benefit money that can be flexibly used for health care, sick days, etc. seems to be a better approach to me, since it is flexible enough to satisfy each person’s unique needs and drivers don’t have to become FTE.
Nice. I can tip $1 every time I use Uber and that can go to the pool.
I think they would likely end up with a two tier system in favor of minimum pay and maximum work for employees. This may end up being a bad deal for some and good deal for others. Employees is not always making more with better job security.
Shouldn’t we be ripping on the snowflakes that voted for ab5. Why do people who don’t work gig work vote on that? They have no idea what’s going on they just see poor people and feel like they should help
FedEx drivers have been contractors for a long time now and if anything, they are much more employees than Uber or Lyft drivers. They have schedules, have to wear uniform and can get their contract terminated if they don’t show up for work. Uber and Lyft drivers have none of that, and it’s completely up to them to make their schedules. I think this will never go through
Can you work as little or as much as you want?
Nope, everyone has a set schedule and deliveries/pickups they have to do
