I have been following Shopify closely. It seems like Shopify is good for people who started journey there at XYZ role.

Also, I have seen lot of people became data Scientist from non stem backgrounds and even accountant and merchants assistants have become Data Scientist. Nothing wrong in it but this has caused decline in the external hiring for the roles. Believe it or not it has definitely decreased the IQ of the Data Science teams working there. Now they are only hiring senior data Scientists to lead the herd of sheep which will definitely help to increase the competency of the teams but will take a lot of time.

Lastly, After the stock appreciation. Shopify has gone cocky and not to mention their interview process is unfair and bullshit which includes life story.

I have interacted with a lot of Shopify employees and found that they aren’t strong technically. They just got those juicy positions because they have been there from a long time.

Specifically talking about their Data Science teams. Can’t comment on engineering team ( heard they are good)

Do you think Shopify is overrated?

you realize you can fail to pass an interview without insulting every data scientist at shopify

frankly the tone and language in this speaks to why you may have been flagged in life story or the full problem solving/behavioral panel as do not pass

I'm all about ripping on Shopify but this sounds like a classic case of "I failed the interview so the company I took the time to apply to and interview with is now a terrible company" post.

    • Thanks Tsxc02 and lisakda. I think FB pay and perks are one the best in the world but with that comes very high expectations and pressure. I have been physically and mentally tense over the past year and want to move out. I hope what I have heard about better WLB at Shopify is True. I also moved to an area which doesn't have many opportunities in tech so remote actually works for me, ideally I would prefer a hybrid model. I am making multiple trade-offs here. Anyway I am still in the interview process and there is no guarantee I will get an offer. Wish me luck.

Good luck, uhqv30. I will say, that the culture and work life balance at Shopify has been absolutely amazing for me. So if you are okay with the TC difference from FAANG then I thing you would be happy.

I did not clear an engineering manager interview (went through all stages) at Shopify, but gained so much respect for the organization and Shopifolks through the process. A great mission and interviewers are very nice which shows the culture at Shopify. Sorry to hear that OP had a bad experience but that seems more like a one off than a norm at Shopify. I'd definitely apply again. With interviews, you win some and lose some. There are various factors at play beyond your control and you've got to accept and move on.

  • How do you follow a company closely? And what data points have you used to form an opinion about the IQ or competency of an entire org? You sound like a salty idiot.
