Tipping is never a thing outside North America (US and Canada). Almost no one tips in Europe, Asia, Australia, Latin America, and Africa. In some countries like Japan, tipping is even considered offensive. Restaurants can always raise prices or include mandatory service charge. Waiters are also paid normal wages outside US. I think allowing waiters to be paid less and let tips make up the difference is stupid. Not to mention prices in the rest of the world always include sales tax! What you see is what you pay. Sales tax, tip, service charge whatever should always be included in the price! That’s “Price Transparency”! If you disagree with “what you see should be what you pay”, I am interested in hearing your thoughts.
Also, prices in the rest of the world always include taxes. Adding sales tax on top of prices looks to me like a bait and switch scam. Seems like the price has been artificially lowered to drive more sales (a psychology play). I am a huge proponent of “what you see is what you pay”
You can always do the math. Always add 25% and you can get pretty close to the actual cost for restaurants. You get used to it as you get used to imperial metric system.
I just convert it to £. $10 on the menu means £10 when I pay, which makes food in Bay Area a lot more expensive than London
So then people will be less willing to eat out. Ultimately, the equilibrium point will be more or less the same (restaurants will pull in the same amount of money), but we won't have the extra trouble of this whole tipping dance at the end of meals.
Nope... You can go to those "cheap culture" countries and learn what real service looks like.. America has the worst service for the premium called tips. The service industry should be up front about the "real" price and pay the employees right
I like tipping at my favorite restaurants, it's a convenient way of saying, hey, I appreciate the service you're providing. But if you don't feel like tipping, go for it
I am not suggesting people not to tip. The waiters and waitresses survive on those tips so it is mean to not tip or tip less. I am suggesting we should reform the whole system in the first place. Waiters should not be allowed to earn less than minimum wage. Sales tax should be included in the sticker price.
If they get minimum wage salary, they will probably get less than what they get with tips. Have you ever asked any of these workers about their opinion on this? I am pretty sure their income would decrease.
I agree with everything except the sales tax. You have to keep in mind the US is big. States have different taxes, thats why tax is not included in purchases. It would be a logistical nightmare to try and have every company display the final price before purchasing. Especially big chains.
I disagree. If price is $5 and sales tax is 5% in one state then just display $5.25. If it is 10% in a different state then just display $5.50. To the manufacturer it is still $5. The store puts the tax on the sticker. Why is that a problem?
Plus the rest of the world is using it. Multinational companies have been able to handle this well for 95% of the world, why would it be a problem for them to do the same in United States?
Yeah why not. Who cares about low income people that barely make a living wage anyway.
The burden should be placed on the employer not the customer. No one is going to stop going to a restaurant if there bill is suddenly 5 to 10 more dollars.
especially when they have an ipad and just turns it around expecting you to tip
I agree that it should end, but I don’t think it’s possible. Maybe we can start by changing the law so every employee starts at the same minimum wage. Today tipped employees can be legally paid $2.13 an hour. I used to wait tables, so I’m sympathetic toward servers. However, crap has been getting worse. Today just about everybody except fast food insinuates or expects a tip. Now even food trucks have a tip jar or present a payment screen with tip. They do nothing except take payment and give the food to me. I tip a server because she comes to me to take the order, bring the food, refill the drink, remove empty dishes, and process payment, without me moving my butt anywhere. If I serve and dispose the food myself, why the hell should I tip them? For the privilege of interacting with them? Even Panera makes tipping available. This is a place where you are expected to pick your own food and drink, then put away the empty dishes yourself. What’s the tip for? For smiling to me when I order? At this rate even McDonald’s would eventually allow tipping.
If the tips don’t put you above minimum wage, they have to pay you the minimum wage (not the waiters minimum wage)
But the lower wage is a legal endorsement for tipping. If we want to change the culture, we should start by not having expectation for tips in the law.
No, I love tipping. I don't like waiting in lines and appreciate free goods, services and upgrades. I wish tipping was adopted everywhere in the world (it's slowly improving). Why so many people on blind want to pay more for things instead of simply learning how to tip has always boggled my mind.
What does topping have to do with waiting in line? Tipping is so expected that it doesn't improve service at all. It does nothing but put money in the waiters pocket while allowing the business to get away with providing shit pay.
I tip so I never have to wait in line. Tipping correctly massively improves service. Many blind folks think of tipping as a necessary evil but if they learned to tip correctly they would see it as value. Free drinks and food at a restaurant is much cheaper to attain through a tip than paying for it at menu price.
I don’t think it’s fair that restaurant owners are allowed to pay them less than minimum wage.
They don’t. If tips don’t make them minimum wage, the owners have to pay them min wage. Also in many states like ca and wa, servers make regular minimum wage and tips are on top of that.
So you agree that in some states the restaurant owners are sometimes allowed to pay their servers less than minimum wage in non-tip wages
Yes, please just include as part of the price, I'm tired of it.
Nooo, you definitely missed the point here.
