Joined Google 8 Month Ago with a PhD (from ivy) to be an ML expert for the team. I have transformed some heuristic based approaches to ML ones in only 5 months, however, the priority of the team has changed and it seems we dont really need an ML person anymore, so most of my time goes for frond-end bug fixing! I’d like to change to a more ML-based or researchy team, but I feel HMs are not responding positively due to my short tenure @Google. I’m disappointed and thinking about leaving Google. However, it may be bad for my CV. Anythought would be truely appreciated. TC :250
Stay for a few more months until you have accumulated a year of work experience
This. Leaving in less than a year has the potential to raise red flags. Leaving after a year is less likely to.
Plus it will give you an opportunity to look more seriously into internal transfer. Also, many jobs are opened in New Year after annual planning (both internally and externally).
It wouldn't be bad for your CV to leave now, as long as it's not establishing or maintaining a pattern.
>PhD >Google >250K Choose 2
Didn’t get this. Care to elaborate? 😀
This person evidently doesn't believe you're earning (only) $250k at Google with a PhD. That said, they're misinformed. I'm not sure why they think a new grad PhD at Google would automatically earn higher than $250k.
Google is boring for ML..I interviewed with them and left uninspired. Very few teams doing good work. Though I have offer, I am joining other place which are more interesting.
What’s your title? SWE or MLE or Research Scientist?
SWE! I was supposed to be a RS, but the team dissolved before my start date and chose this SWE team instead (bad decision!)
Just email Sundar or TK
Shįt, just became his asst.
What kind of ml does google even do ? Probably their ads team has some nice bandit work . The rest just seems like deep learning which is not fun . Unless you want to do research , which would be deepmind
Start looking for new teams at Google right now. Normally people are supposed to wait 1 year before switching to a different team, but your pretty close and it will take you some time to find a team. If that doesn't work out, then consider jumping. I don't think there's a reason to go through the hassle without at least 1 more try.
Why do you like ML so much, shit is boring af

Chase your passion. Or at least chase the TC. At the moment you seem to be doing neither.
Before joining Google, I thought this could be an awesome opportunity, however situation has changed due to unforeseen things. I really want to join a good team and work hard, but it seems not possible :(
Don't waste time doing things that do not further your goals. Life is short. Time is the only thing you can never earn back.
