I'm currently a Dev at Microsoft, top rewards and visible projects on cloud. I'm getting my MBA in a couple weeks, and I want to use it to get into Google (or Facebook). I used to love coding, but now I want to focus on the bigger picture (system design, influence architecture, tech objectives, customers, etc), and eventually become an EM so that I can empower other's careers on top of influencing the bigger picture. Given that I don't want to spend my days tracking the scrumboard (will do if absolutely necessary...), or just be the human incarnation of a deadline reminder... Do you think TPM aligns more with my goals? Or should I apply for a PM? I liked TPM because I wanted to remain technical, but I have heard they just track deadlines :$
In the case you described - I'm not sure I understand why you'd want to move to tpm on the way to em. Sounds like a detour to me
Honestly... I'm too young (skipped some years at school, and finished college earlier), no big company wants to offer me an EM at this time. I don't blame them. But I want to start my path here ASAP, so TPM sounded like a great start to have more experience before the switch while starting to practice PM-related skills.
In that case - if what you really want is to be a successful EM I recommend focusing on IC engineering roles to get the foundations. Tpm and pm paths are very different. Unless you have passion for them and that's where you want to end up (which is a very good path as well) I would advise against it
Care to explain ‘I’m getting my mba in few weeks’? Online? Was it helpful?
I have been able to provide more clarity to my team on its processes day to day, but nothing major yet, hence the job switch
Tpm isn't really in the path to em, read 'the managers path' that might give you some insight.

I'm a TPM who is still very technical day to day, but I'm in kind of a niche in Google Research. I think the technical requirements varies pretty wildly amongst teams.
This is still a great data point! Thanks. Given that you still maintain the tech edge, how likely would it be for you to transition to EM if you wanted to?
