Should I be worried?

Hello Blind,

I was told by my manager not to attend a meeting I helped organized with a client as they intend to have a discussion around extending the team. Apparently, the intent is to have less parties on the call, but the team is fairly lean as it really includes 5 people.

Should I be worried that I may be let go from the project? Additionally, would this be a performance related issue? How severe is it to be asked to roll-off during the extension period? I’ve never found myself in that situation before as my reviews have been between mid 3s and low 4s.

Edit: Thank you everyone for your insight and advice. I found out I am being cut, but it’s simply because they are downsizing the team for a temporary extension. Me being cut was not a reflection of performance, there simply was not enough work to go around. Apologies for appearing frantic earlier, first time experiencing it, and wasn’t sure if this an innuendo that I may have not been aware of.

  • Because you helped organize a meeting doesn’t mean you get to attend it. “Organize a meeting” is not a scarce skill. If they are talking project management, they don’t want you in the room because they’ll be talking about you and people like you and don’t want you to feel awkward about it. Neither of those things should make you feel particularly good, but that’s just the biz.

Are others from your team invited or have they also been dropped? If nobody from your team is invited, then you need not worry. If you’re the only one who isn’t invited, then there’s a possibility that what you’re thinking might happen.

It seems as though I’m the only one. However I am also the only junior resource, so not sure if that counts for anything

If you’re the only junior resource, that might be the reason. Don’t overthink it but just watch out for any further subtle exclusion signs. Might be too soon to conclude at this point.

  • Some clients get super weird when it is them and a whole bunch of vendors/contractors in a meeting. They feel outnumbered, etc. Of course they rarely worry when it is the other way around..

My advice is to not overthink it. Use that time to do something you like to do instead. Refill your cup and take your mind off work for a sec.

  • Even if you do get rolled off the extension don’t worry too much about it. It’s pretty common to narrow down the team at that point as clients aren’t always willing to keep paying for a full team - especially if the extension is for project management or handing off to the client team. And I’ll second the comment about the number of consultants to number of clients ratio. Some clients get weird about it and some partners / managers are really focused on optics. In either case it has nothing to do with you or your performance. That said, during extension discussions is a good time to ask your direct manager for informal feedback on the project and - especially if you’re worried about your performance. It demonstrates that you want to learn and get better.

Thank you, this was very thorough. I have made sure to consistently ask feedback during the engagement and also reached out after being aware of the news.
