P4 (senior) at Workday. TC is about 300k given the recent good stock runs. I only have 3.5 yrs of experience as a backend dev. I am very interested in moving to South Bay, after hearing all the $$$$ that South Bay companies offer here at blind, but I have a family now and my spouse doesn’t work. Would I be able to get a 400k TC offer from South Bay companies given my background? Considering that the cost of living is massively different between Pleasanton and South Bay.

  • First congrats on the 300k comp, second as a person with 8+ years of experience who doesn't make 300k yet , I would tell you it would be very hard to land that with 3.5 years of experience, but it never hurts to try !

How's the interview bar at workday? What was your offer when you joined?

Depends on the team, but in general I feel the interview bar is laughable, but the candidate pool we get is also much less competitive than South Bay, peninsula and sf companies, so i still see a lot of people fail. Coming from eBay, it’s probably easy for you to get in, but you have to perform out of the band to take the big money home if you are smart.

    • Yea, only way the math works. Congrats on crushing it. It will be hard for external companies to match that unless you're very well known in your field, tech talks, large open source projects. You can crush interviews, but recruiters will be hesitant. Even then you're likely only to get a compensation match instead of any increase at that level.

  • 95k base + 40k stock per year is 135TC. Am I missing something?

So..... basically, yes you can get a raise, but you likely won’t get 400TC with only 3.5 years.

I’d be happy with 250TC with that many years experience.

Those numbers were my initial offer 3.5 yrs ago. I put it there because the guy asked what my initial offer was. Also in that offer, 40k rsu was vesting over 4yrs, not per year.

But yea thanks for the guesstimates. Make me sad though.

  • You can probably get up to 350k max with that year of experience. But you are from Workday so it’s likely to be lower, maybe way lower

  • That's a great TC in East Bay. Do you mind to breakdown initial rsu allocation vs. refresher?

The initial offer was just regular college grad offer. Pretty standard east bay 9.5k base + 40k rsu (4y). Refresher was amazing, and the stock appreciation definitely helped this year.
