Should I care to do public speaking at conferences?
So until I got to Microsoft I almost never saw any leaders go do public speaking at conferences, or try to speak at industry events to get awards or anything. When I got to MSFT it seems like that was a requirement. Now I’ve left but I see lots of activity and traction on LinkedIn from those who go speak at the events. I’m trying to see if that’s something that actually…matters? Does it help with recruiting talent? Does it raise the profile of companies? Or is it a dumb self-congratulatory circle jerk?
This is a serious question. I assumed it was a circle jerk and preferred to spend my time actually developing my team and delivering value to customers. And I have had a very successful career. I just don’t know if this is what I need to be doing to make it to the next level or not.
